Brent M. Hjermstad, M.D.

Dr. Hjermstad received his training in gastrointestinal pathology from Dr. Elson Helwig, a pioneer in the field. Mentored by Dr. Helwig at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), Dr. Hjermstad worked side-by-side with Dr. Leslie Sobin, respected author and editor of the World Health Association “Blue Books” and the AFIP fascicles.

After his year of training, Dr. Hjermstad spent an additional three years as an AFIP staff pathologist in the Department of Gastrointestinal Pathology, reviewing over ten thousand diagnostically complex cases including numerous rare conditions. While at the AFIP, Dr. Hjermstad was tutored by Dr. Kamal Ishak, a pioneer in the field of modern hepatic pathology. He also worked with Dr. Zachary Goodman, who has served as the Chairman of the Department of Hepatic Pathology. While at the AFIP, Dr. Hjermstad was the author and co-author of multiple papers in the field of gastrointestinal pathology.
After graduating from the University of Arizona College of Medicine as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Dr. Hjermstad completed an internship in internal medicine at the U.S. Air Force’s largest medical facility, Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. He returned to Arizona to complete a four- year residency in anatomic and clinical pathology.
Following his tour at the AFIP, Dr. Hjermstad continued his national service as a pathologist in the Air Force, with tours of duty in Alaska and Ohio. While in Alaska, he helped in the development of the first military telepathology program with his colleagues at the AFIP. His military service culminated with directorship of the third largest air force laboratory, located at Wright Patterson AFB, OH. Dr. Hjermstad retired as a full Colonel in the United States Air Force.
Dr. Hjermstad is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology. His is an active member of numerous national and local professional medical societies and organizations. He has been with Incyte Diagnostics since 1998, and is one of our specialists for difficult gastrointestinal and liver biopsies.
Dr. Hjermstad is licensed in the states of Washington, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Arizona, Alaska and Oregon.
